Borger, Texas is a small town located in Hudspeth County, Texas. The population was 2,898 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Austin-Round Rock metropolitan area. The Borger post office opened on July 26, 1879 and closed on December 31, 1961. The first white person to live in what would later become Borger was John Wesley Ackerman. Ackerman founded a mill here in 1879 which operated until 1886 when he sold it to Aiken & Company of Oregon for $5,000. This gave rise to the belief that Borger had been founded by two men from Oregon who were looking for land to build a mills on opposite sides of the Rio Grande River because they thought this would make for an advantageous trade route between their countries. However, there is no evidence that such a trading operation took place and it is more likely that Ackerman simply named his new settlement after one of his old mills in Oregon. In 1902 an act was passed by the Texas State Legislature called the "Borger Act", which named local farmers elected officials responsible for all aspects of agriculture within their respective borders - including transportation and irrigation systems as well as marketing and market regulation This made Borger one of the earliest agricultural towns in Texas and helped spur development around it over time In 1925 Alice Clements married George Waddell who became mayor of BorGER from 1927-1929 After World War II many residents left BorGER due to racial tension throughout America; however some stayed behind to work on post-war reconstruction projects A major factor behind postwar growth in BorGER was its proximity toAustin; this fact also led to increased commerce along Interstate 10 which bisected the town center
