Borger, Texas is a small town located in Hudspeth County, Texas, and it has been mentioned as early as 1836. The town was founded by Danish immigrants who were looking for a place to build a new life after leaving their homeland during the Napoleonic Wars. Borger was originally called "Dalhart," but the name was changed to Borger in honor of the first postmaster, Jakob Borger. Borger quickly became known for its agriculture and cattle farming. It also had a large lumberyard which produced both woodchips and barrels for distillation purposes. In addition, BorGERs (bargain prices) grocery store helped contribute to its prosperity. ButborGER's most significant achievement may have been its construction of the Hudspeth County Courthouse in 1881-82. This building served as the seat of government until 1907 when it was moved to Pecan Grove and replaced by the present courthouse. The courthouse is one of only two remaining examples from the original Borger community that still stand in Hudspeth County today. The town experienced several tragedies during World War I including a fire that destroyed much of their downtown business district; however, due to donations from local residents, damages were repaired and rebuilding began immediately afterward. After World War II ended, many people left BorGER for other towns in Hudspeth County due to increased competition from nearby Austin and Lubbock based on economic development opportunities available within those communities at that time. However, many descendants of those original settlers still live in BorGER today with active involvement in their community affairs through various organizations such as the Chamber of Commerce and Rotary Club
In 1827, Borger was founded by Captain John C. Borger and his wife Catharine. The town prospered based on its agricultural industry and timber exports. In 1853, the first courthouse was built in the town, and a post office was opened in 1857. In 1862, Borger became a county seat of Hudspeth County. In 1896, Hudspeth County merged with Travis County to form new Texas Statehood.
