Representatives from 24 counties attended the meeting including Hudspeth County; when it came time for presentations on individual school sites, Hudspeth voted against any proposed sites within its own boundaries because it felt that its schools would be more effectively served by systems within other counties with similar demographics and resources. A compromise plan was developed whereby each county would get one site with a full-time teacher assigned to it; this arrangement lasted until 1911 when both Travis and Dallas Counties seceded from Hudspeth and formed their own school districts (Travis became Dallas Independent School District #1 while Dallas became Austin Independent School District #2). It wasn’t until 1916 that finally construction began on what is now known as “the old high school building” which stood on current Highway 36 just south of town limits until it was destroyed by fire in 1951 due to careless burning by students attending nearby Reagan High School (later renamed Lamar High School).
