Borger, Texas is a small town in Gregg County, Texas. The population was 1,575 at the 2010 census. It is located on the eastern edge of Gregg County and is bordered by Mineral Wells to the north and east, Live Oak to the south and west, and Canyon Lake to the northwest. The town was founded in 1879 by German immigrants as "Borgerstadt." In 1907 it changed its name to Borger after Gustav Borger, a congressman from Germany who had helped create western Gregg County. The first post office in Borger opened in 1879. It closed in 1903. The first store in BorGER opened on December 3, 1888. The last store closed in 1964. The town has two churches: First Baptist Church which was built in 1912 and currently uses parts of an old schoolhouse from 1901; and Lutheran Church which was built there in 1927 but has not been used since then. There are also a few schools: one public school (grades Pre-Kindergarten through 12th grade), one private school (grades K-12), one church affiliated with First Baptist Church (grades Pre-Kindergarten through 12th grade), and one park maintained by the Gregg County Commission that includes a playground and wrestling ring/cage for use by local kids during summertime programming events like carnivals or dog shows etc..
