Borger is a small town in Johnson County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Austin-Round Rock metropolitan area. The first people to live in what is now Borger were the Kiowa and Comanche Apaches. They founded a mission called San Antonio de Borger in 1827. In 1847, General Sam Houston granted land to Juan Francisco de Borja for his rancho San Antonio de Borger y Costilla (later known as Rancho Gonzales). development began around this time with some clearing of forest and settlement by Hispanic pioneers who brought their livestock and crops to new areas near the Trinity River. In 1905, David Sarnoff purchased Rancho Gonzales from Juan Francisco de Borja and developed it into one of Texas' most important cattle ranches. He named it Borger because he had seen an old post office building there that looked like a "boringer". The town's first store opened in 1912 under the name First National Bank of Borger. The town grew rapidly during World War II due to its proximity to Fort Worth and its ability to ship goods by way of Corpus Christi Bayou. After the war ended, many businesses closed down because the economy changed so much after World War II. By 1950, only two businesses remained open: First National Bank and Chamber of Commerce where chamber president Don Botkin still resides today as a resident emeritus member since 2001; also located on Main Street are civic buildings including Town Hall (1912), School Annex (1930), Fire Station No 2 (1940) and Water Tower No 3 (1963). In addition, several churches served as community centers until they were all demolished between 1990-2000 when Interstate 35E bypassed town center traffic limits making it impossible for them anymore to remain open without major impact on local life or business operations which then led to demolition/rebuilding/replacement thereof according A few years ago we had 4 churches remaining butDue To I35E And State Regulation All 5 Buildings Are Now defunct And Can no longer be used For Religious purposes
