Borger is a town in Hardin County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,529 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dallas–Fort Worth metropolitan area. The first settlers in what would become Borger were Dutch immigrants who arrived in 1836. The town was originally named "New Amsterdam." A post office was established in 1839, and it continued to be used until 1903. In 1861, Confederate General David Easley attacked and burned Borger for refusing to follow his orders to surrender. The town's only building remaining from that attack is a historical marker located on Main Street. In 1870, two brothers named Wieland and John Hegarty moved frompledgeville (now Humble) west of Dallas to take up homesteads east of present-day Borger on land granted them by President Ulysses S. Grant as part of the Western Lumber Company lands giveaway program. They called their new community "Hegarty" after one of their early investors, Hegarty Veeder & Co., which had been organized in Indianapolis Indiana five years earlier as a lumber company with branches throughout Illinois and Missouri). In 1871 they built a log cabin on what is today Elm Street just east of Main Street; this became the first frame house built in what would become Borger proper. The townsite designation for present-day Borger came about during an 1870 annexation effort by Hardin County when ranching interests began encroaching on primary agricultural land lying south of FM 919 (the current downtown boundaries). To protect those acres from development, commissioners decided that all inhabitants within easy walking distance should be given numbered streets gridlocked with residences clustered around churches or other civic buildings such as schools or hotels/motels until township limits could be reached; this proved impractical because residents frequently left their homes for work reasons or simply refused to move if they didn't receive new streetside dwellings thereby violating township rules; so commissioners designated all remaining unincorporated territory along FM 919 as "Borger Township", still without any actual township boundaries within its borders today! When hard times hit much later during World War II some citizens banded together to form the American Legion Post #302 which still exists today providing social support services for veterans living within its jurisdiction today!
