Borger, Texas is a small town located in the central part of Midland County, Texas. The population was 1,695 at the 2010 census. Borger is named after General John A. Borger who served as United States Minister to Sweden from 1897-1901. The first settler in what is now Borger was James Meeks who arrived in 1868. By 1870, there were 10 citizens living in the community which had a post office and school. In 1881, Elisha Prentice married Anna Ladd and took over the proprietorship of the store which later became known as The Ladd Store & Market. Mrs. Prentice also ran a blacksmith shop next door which she operated for many years until it closed its doors in 1922 because of financial difficulties caused by World War I shortages of materials. In 1903, First Methodist Church was built on Main Street with donated land and $1,000 from Wm Hynes who owned an adjacent rancho (farm). The church served as a place where people could come together to worship God and listen to sermons preached by ministers from other denominations during services on Saturday evening times when there were no classes or meetings at school that day. Reverend Jno Hatton officiated at services until 1906 when he became pastor of First Methodist Church in nearby Midland City where he remained until his death in 1935 In 1916, two men named Clementson started a grocery store called The Old Country Store on Main Street just east of present-day State Highway 59 which they opened up using their family farm land that they had acquired earlier that year while working for Ewing Grocery Company Ltd., one of Dallas' largest grocery stores before it went out of business in 1951 . Mr. and Mrs. Clementson operated their store until their deaths some time between 1925-1926 . It should be noted that this Grocery Store was not actually located near BorGER but rather across FM 925 about one mile south west (past present-day State Highway 59) In 1927/28 Drs Philander Dyer & son began practice at Doctors Dyer Pediatrics Clinic on Westheimer Road north of town limits along with Drs Glenn Fenton & Bernard Kerkhoff who had been added to the staff only months earlier . They did most all their practices here before moving into our current building on Elm Street within 3 years It should be noted that this clinic still exists today - providing excellent medical care for residents and visitors alike! There are several interesting stories associated with early BorGER including: In 1902 when local hardware store pioneer Wm Hynes donated land for use as an agricultural fairgrounds (later renamed Mesquite Fairgrounds), four acres off present day SH 59 opposite junction with US 287), John A.-G's Paint Shop (now home to Brushstroke Furniture), Post Office (opened Nov 27th 1865; closing Jan 2nd 1867 due to mail fraud) - all were open during extended periods without interruption serving locals & travelers alike! Soon afterwards another general store opening occurred when Dutchman Jno Haanen donated five acres northeast corner SH 249/US 287 Rd./Old White Settlement Road now Loop 24 @ 4 miles east side thereof - becoming known as "Haanen's Addition" - quickly becoming one of the most important businesses within townlimits due to its wide selection Of groceries items complementing general repairs And furnishings needed For Day To Day Living !!!!!
