In 1955, it merged with neighboring Bellaire to form the current city of Bonham. The first post office opened in Bonham on July 4, 1879. The name of the town derives from General George Washington's home district of Virginia: "Bingham" means "village near Mount Vernon." The original settlers were Methodists who built homes on large parcels of land which they divided into lots and sold to other farmers. In 1895, an electric streetcar line began service between downtown Austin and rural properties east of I-35W. This opened up new opportunities for farming and milling; bonnets (a type of cotton twill fabric) became popular due to its heat resistance and ability to stand up to wear during hot weather conditions. In 1955, when the Hudspeth County seat moved from Bellaire to what is now Bonham, residents voted not to merge with neighboring Bellaire because they felt that this would have led to a loss of jobs in their city and an increase in taxes there. The two cities remain separate today but share common services such as police patrols and firefighting

Bonham is a town in Johnson County, Texas, United States. The population was 2,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area. Bonham was settled in 1853 by James Bonham and his family from England. The town site was surveyed in 1854 by John Sowers and named for General George Washington Bonham. In 1865, General Edwin Ewell decided to move Austin's Confederate army from Galveston to Houston so that he could pursue the Union army across Texas and into Mexico City. He entrusted General James Hogg with command of the Texans in this effort, and Hogg appointed his brother-in-law Captain John Wirt as Bonham's first mayor. On November 3, 1865, Houstonians voted to secede from Texas due to their dissatisfaction with Ewell's leadership. In 1870, Major Edward Janssen established a small ranch south of town which became known as Rancho Viejo de la Gente (Rancho Viejo). Janssen served as its owner and landlord until his death in 1886. In 1892 Anthony Smith purchased Rancho Viejo de la Gente from Janssen for $10 per acre; it remained under Smith's ownership until 1951 when it passed through gift/ Legacy succession to Philip Anschutz Jr., founder of Anschutz Entertainment Group (AEG), who donated it to the University of Texas at Austin for use as a research center on Hispanic culture and history before donation it back to UT Austin in 1972 along with other campus property including the original Memorial Stadium which seats 80,000 people on an artificial surface created by Mean Creek Lake. In 1901 Harry Chandler bought 95% of Anchutz Entertainment Group stock; he changed its name to Hollywood Pictures Corporation after incorporating portions of both Rancho Viejo de la Gente land holdings into what is now Hollywood Park (later called Regal) movie theater district northeast of downtown Austin serving primarily IMAX screens as well as home video rental stores adjacent thereto beginning operations on May 25th,. By 1958 most all theaters had been replaced by IMAX/PANASONIC cinemas while special effects were handled at RKO Radio Corporation’s headquarters located next door within sight of IMAX equipment used there also during those years.. As early as 1957 studio services were being provided daily one block east of Main Street between Hillcroft Drive and Slaughter Lane off Interstate 35W right outside what is now TXUT’s Main Campus limits near today’s UT Southwestern Medical Center parking lot... Today Hollywood Park functions more like an amusement park or theme park than any real live production facilities used operationally since then.. back The first settlers arrived around 1853 when James Bonham and his family came overland from England but soon moved onto land that would become part of present day Bonhamtownsite surveyors Whit Sowers & John Sowers soon after submitted their plat map naming this location "George Washington"after general George Washington who fought against Mexican independence movement & later Ulysses S Grant during American Civil War
Bonham was founded in 1859 by John and Mary Bonham. The town initially consisted of a few homes and a mill. In the 1860s, the town began to grow as a result of its location on the San Marcos River. By 1870, the town had grown to include a school, distillery, post office, and several businesses. In 1880, John Bonham died and his wife Mary took over the business. The couple continued to run the business until their death in 1903. After their deaths, the business continued to be run by their daughter Sarah for many years before it passed into private hands in 1959.
