Bonham is a town in Johnson County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,714 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Amarillo–Flaminburg–Quitman City Metropolitan Statistical Area. Bonham is located on the Llano River and is bordered to the east by Holdenville and to the north by Canyon Lake. The first settlers in what would become Bonham were John and Martha Parsley who arrived in 1827 from Virginia. They built a cabin near present-day Canyon Lake. Other early pioneers included Captained William Fenton who settled in 1829 on an estate along the Llano River and Postmaster General James Hogg who built a log cabin on what would become today's corner of Main Street and US Highway 83 (now FM 1492). In 1839, George Aiken moved his family from Tennessee to outlying Johnson County after purchasing 640 acres (242 hectares) of land northeast of modern-day Bonham on what became known as "Aiken Prairie". He named his new home "Bonham" after his former home state of Georgia. In 1840, Aiken erected a small frame courthouse with three rooms and served as county seat for Johnson County until it was moved to Holdenville in 1863 when that city became the county seat. In 1861, Confederate general Braxton Bragg's forces burned much ofcenterJohnsonCounty including Aiken Prairie where he had reside earlier that year before moving southward into McCulloch County In 1865, following Union victory over Confederate troops at Appomattox Court House northwest of Dallas, most Johnson Counties merged into Texas as part of Reconstruction which ended two years later with Texans becoming Ulysses S Grant's second term as President General Ulysses S Grant ordered all American Indian tribes living east of the Mississippi River must leave within 10 years or be forcibly removed by force if not relocated On January 3, 1870, Henry Weldon bought 640 acres (242 hectares) southeast of modern day Bonham from George Aiken for $1 per acre (0.50 hectare). Weldon named his new community "Weldon." On May 6th 1870 residents voted unanimously to change their name to "Bonham" due to high demand from citizens there for change following Reconstruction period events such as Lincoln’s assassination Today one can still find examples including some grills used during BBQs dating back to around 1930s outside hotels/motels along Interstate 20

Bonham was founded by John and Sarah Bonham in 1852. The town was named for General Sam Houston, who had fought in the Mexican-American War. The first post office opened in 1853. In 1907, the town annexed part of Hudspeth County.
