Bonham is a town in Texas, United States. The population was 1,973 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Brownsville–Harlingen, TX Metropolitan Statistical Area. Bonham is named after Samuel Bonham, an early settler in the area. The first settlers in what is now Bonham were three men from Northumberland County who came to the area around 1853. They set up a Claim No. 2 on July 21, 1853 and laid out a town square with six houses and 12 acres (5 ha). In 1865, James Denton erected a small cabin on land that still stands near present day US 90 south of US 281 east of US 281/US 181. In 1870 John Gentry purchased 640 acres (248 ha) northeast of present day US 90 from Solomon Hogg for $1,000 cash plus 10% interest in homemade cigars he had been smoking since 1794. He built his house called "The Gentry Cabin" which still stands today on this property next to streams flowing through it and across current highway 281/US 181 between FM 2611 (now I-10) and FM 2606 (now I-35). This was one of several small log homes constructed by Gentry throughout his ranching career including ones located at present day White Sands National Monument southeast of Harlingen and Rockwall counties near Cedar Park In 1875 Isaac Haas purchased 801 acres (321 ha), including what is now Bonham from Gentry for $2,500 cash plus 10% interest in handmade cigars he had been smoking since 1794 In1878 Harmon Wofford arrived with his family from England and founded the city of Waco about 25 miles southwest of Harlingen on what are now Farmington Road north of FM 620 east edge Of Big Bend Ranch . Upon arriving he found all but five families living along Buffalo Bayou near Clear Lake . A few years later Wofford donated some land to build Fort Worth Railroad Station which served as the county seat until 1886 when Harlingen became the permanent county seat . The post office was established at Waco in 1888 . In 1893 Lillie Bellefontaine married Sam Houston Sr., one time president pro Tem for Texas , making her Mrs Houston's sister-in-law In 1896 Charles Fenton bought 801 acres (321 ha) adjoining Harmon Wofford's farmstead including what is now Bonham for $3,600 cash plus 10% interest in handmade cigars he had been smoking since 1794 d He also donated 100 shares of stock worth $100 each in The American Tobacco Company which became known as Crown Cigarettes After their purchase they moved their headquarters to Crown point where they continue manufacturing cigarettes until recently .. Although there have been many changes over time within both communities it generally retains its name “BonHAM” or simply “BONHAM” due to its location & history

However, during the 1970s and 1980s there were several rounds of economic decline and social unrest which caused crime rates to rise. In recent years, however, Bonham has regained some stability and has begun to experience resurgence in its economy thanks to new development projects such as a municipal airport and new housing developments.
