Bonham is a town in McLennan County, Texas, United States. The population was 5,813 at the 2010 census. The Bonham Utility District No. 1 extends into McLennan County and includes much of the Town of Bonham. The town's name is derived from John Randolph Bonham, an American politician who served as the 34th Governor of Texas (1911-1915). The town began as a small community on the banks of Buffalo Bayou in 1879. It grew rapidly due to its location and easy access to railroad transportation and minerals that were discovered in nearby Eagle Ford Plateau. In 1907, the first post office was established in the new town and by 1920 it had grown to include a store, two hotels, two churches, three schools and over 100 homes. In 1922, John RandolphBonham Elementary School opened with grades Pre-Kindergarten through 8th grade; it was later renamed after his father. In 1930–31 Mrs Lidell Kapp donated land for a new high school which became known as Baylor University High School (now Baylor University Preparatory Academy). Mr Walthall Hargrave donated funds for replacement of part of the original school building which still stands today on Main Street near where Waco Methodist Church once stood. On December 7th 1931 local residents gathered around their pastor’s home on Elm Street to hear him announce plans for what would become Baylor University – now one of America’s top education institutions with more than 3800 students enrolled from all 50 U.S states plus international students from 140 countries! Reverend Cone preached about how this great university could only exist if there was open enrollment so everyone could have an equal opportunity! After many years laboring under false expectations no one even realized they wanted one until eventually Reverend Cone announced that “All That Is Needed Is A Good Student And We Will Have One!” This event changed everything because since then people knew that Baylor University Was For All And Grades From Kindergarten To College! Bonham was founded in 1881 by a group of men led by John H. Bonham, Sr. It became an important cattle and cotton town during the early years of the Texas Revolution. The community was destroyed in a fire in 1902, but was rebuilt and renamed Bonham after the founder. The town experienced some growth during World War II, with the arrival of industry and new residents. However, Bonham declined during the postwar years as its economy shifted to service-related activities. In the late 1990s, however, it regained some economic vitality with efforts to establish a local arts scene. Today, Bonham is a small community located within interfere County seat of Corsicana.
Bonham is located in McLennan County, Texas. The population was 9,691 at the 2010 census. Bonham has been inhabited by Native Americans for over a thousand years. A post office called Bonham was established in 1872, and continued operation until it was discontinued in 1906. The first white settlers arrived in what is now McLennan County in the early 1800s. They were primarily traders and farmers who traveled through the area looking for new land to farm and trade goods with. In 1848, John Crain settled near present-day Tyler, Texas and began selling land east of the Brazos River. He named his new settlement after British general Sir Hugh Bonham (1793-1858). By 1860, many other settlers had started settling around Tyler as well; these included Isaac Hood (1801-1886), Solomon Hudspeth (1811-1875), James Hogg (1800-1876), George Wacoal (1792-1873) and others. By 1870, there were more than 100 people living within sight of Tyler proper on both sides of the Brazos River. In 1872, a post office called Bonham was established at this location; it continued operations until 1906 when it was discontinued due to growth of nearbyTyler city limits. The town's first school opened in 1874; it served grades one through twelve until 1915 when a larger high school replaced it. The cotton gin that operated here from 1909 to 1912 remains an important part of local history; its products helped improve cotton farming across much of Texas during this time period. The community experienced rapid growth following World War II; by 1950, it had reached peak population size with over 10,000 residents. This rapid expansion caused some problems however; while bonhomians were eager to join the burgeoning cityscape they found themselves unable to do so due to lack of space or infrastructure -a common occurrence during this time period among small towns/cities throughout America . After several decades of stagnation and decline however,Bonham began experiencing significant revitalization starting in the late 2000s which has led to its current resurgence as an active community with vibrant cultural experiences and opportunities available for citizens
