Bonham, Texas is a small town located in the Midland region of Texas. The population was 2,819 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area and the larger Austin-M Round Rock metropolitan area. The Bonham post office opened in 1892 and closed in 1991. The first settler in Bonham was James A. Bonham who came to the area from Missouri in 1873. In 1907, local rancher and banker George Waddell donated land to establish a townsite on what is now Main Street in Bonham. The name "BonHAM" (pronounced boh-nuhm) comes from an early Indian word meaning "place where there are trees". The original settlers were farmers who grew corn, wheat, cotton, sugar beets and other crops on their property while developing industries such as mattresses and saddles for cattle. In 1916, a group of Methodist preachers traveled to Dallas to observe World War I military service training soldiers at Fort Sam Houston before returning home to start a church here. When war ended, they returned home but decided to stay until things calmed down so they founded the First Methodist Church here which still operates today as one of the most visible symbols of downtown Bonham today - much like when it originally became known as "the little city". They also started a school system which gradually mushroomed into the present day high school system that includes 10 elementary schools, four middle schools and three high Schools along with several charter schools enrolling students throughout central Texas including both public school districts as well as private academies/schools within HISD educational boundaries). After 30 years of growth (and many more residents moving into town), services available to residents only increased exponentially after incorporation by Special District #2 in 1984 when County Judge Don Hammack assigned city employees resources hitherto dedicated exclusively to county government functions (such as water main replacement etc.) thus making City Manager Donnie Kapperman's dream come true! Bonham, Texas is located in the Hill Country of central Texas and is bordered by Vernon to the east, Grimes County to the west, and Nolan County to the north. The town was founded in 1879 by Judge John L. Bonham as a stopping point on the Santa Fe Trail. In 1886, when it became a census-designated place (CDP), it had a population of 375. The population grew steadily until 1960 when it peaked at 1,533 and then slowly declined until 2000 when it decreased again to 707. As of 2010, Bonham had a population of 490. The history of Bonham begins with Judge John L. Bonham who settled in what is now Bonham in 1879 after traveling through Central Texas on his way from Houston to Valdez. He sawed logs for a wagon road he was building that would link Fort Worth with Austin and named his new settlement "Bonham." By 1890, there were over 100 residents living in the community which included about 20 farmers, six grangers/nuns (religious orders that acted as middlemen between landowners and their tenants), two school teachers, one postmaster (1889-1910) and one jailer/warden (1890-1920). At first everything was done out of doors due to lack of indoor plumbing but within five years running water had been added to many homes along with electricity in 1906. In 1910 Revkin Hargrave became the first white settler in what is now Bonham when he arrived from Wichita Falls via stagecoach carrying his family following an offer from Alfred Iverson Sr., owner of Foard's grocery store on Uptown Boulevard near present day Longhorn Airport. Mr. Iverson offered Hargrave 640 acres which included all that is today known as downtown Bonham including Present Street and much of what lies north thereof including most of Present StreetSW corner W side: buildings fronting US Highway 183 are also included herein; land wide open country lying east & southW admires present Longview airport runway 06 & runs parallel thereto: some buildings still standing may owe their existence hereto only because they were used for commercial purposes during WWI or II aviation days (& other structures built since then) Bingham reached its peakpopulation numbering 1,533 according to 1950 census data however this number slowly began declining throughout 1960s thru 2000s before increasing slightly again beginning 2006 onward Although current population size remains below 500 residentsHistoric downtown area includes most remaining original structure from 1880s including Post Office & Jail

The town quickly grew and became a stop on the Oregon Trail. In 1840, the town's first post office opened and it remained in operation until 1898. In 1851, the Union Pacific Railroad arrived in town and began construction of its line from Pecos to Amarillo. The railroad stimulated economic growth within the community and helped make Bonham a significant agricultural center. By 1870, over 50 businesses were located within the small settlement. In 1902, when Dallas County was established, Bonham became one of its first areas. At this time, Bonham had a population of around 100 residents and held several commercial buildings including a grocery store, blacksmith shop and livery stable. However, by 1930s Bonham had shrunk to just 10 residents as agriculture declined while local industry picked up during World War II boom times. However, following the war there wasn't much growth or development until recent years when new homes have been built along with more jobs in nearby towns like Irvington
