Bonham, Texas is a town in Williamson County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Austin–Round Rock metropolitan area. The first settler in what is now Bonham was John A. Brown who arrived in 1845. Colonel James Hagan and his men built the first post office there on December 3, 1846. In 1870, when Williamson County was organized, Bonham incorporated as a village. The local school district was founded in 1889 and continued until 1920 when it merged into the Austin public schools system; however, some students still attend bonham elementary school which has been open since 1888. In 1902 Samuel Barker opened the first general store in what are now Bonham and Ector counties; this store became known as "Barker's General Store". In 1907 Charles Fenton erected an old red barn which he called "Fenton's Red Barn". Fenton served as mayor of Bonham from 1909 to 1912 and 1916 to 1921; he also chaired the first municipal election held in Williamson County that year. By 1925, most businesses had closed down because of prohibition - so much so that only three stores remained by 1930 with just two employees each for all those businesses combined! However, things started to change around 1935 when Prohibition ended and bootlegging began again; within a few years many small businesses had reopened thanks to new business owners like Harry Higgs who ran Higgs Brewery on Main Street (now Main Street Park). These days many people know about Higgs Brewery because they have heard of or seen it on television or film such as "The Hard Luck Gang" or "Gone Girl". After World War II many farmers decided to move away from farming due to difficult times during the postwar period followed by increased competition from other industries such as petroleum production caused by oil discoveries offshoreTexas beginning in 1947 led to increased development around rural areas throughout Williamson County including Bonham with projects such as Interstate 35 Business Boulevard being constructed through downtown based off highway numbers then numbering I-35 Alternate becoming I-20 Alternate while other major road improvements were made like FM 1960 heading east from downtown out towards Willacyville replacing FM 527 then northwest out towards Nacogdoches replacing FM 910 then continuing southwest out onto US 281 paralleling US 90 until finally terminating at I-35 near Marble Falls becoming I-40 Alternate serving both MPD & State Highway 8 realigning streets several miles south from original alignment making access easier & faster for drivers today than ever before!
