Bonham, Texas is a small town in Gregg County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,519 at the 2010 census. Bonham is home to the Gregg County Courthouse and Museum. The first mention of Bonham in active history comes from an early settler named John Bonham who claimed land on the banks of the Lavaca River in 1814. In 1825, James Hogg settled near what is now Bonham and named his new settlement after Sir Robert Peel of Scotland who had been instrumental in helping to purchase land for Great Britain during its colonization process. In 1846, General Sam Houston purchased 640 acres (2 km²) near present-day Bonham from James Hogg for $5 per acre. On July 6th of that year, Houston issued a proclamation announcing that he had found "a place convenient to him where he could build a house without interruption from Indians." This location would soon become known as Sam Houston Park or simply "Houston". Houston's choice for the site was not fortuitous; it situates itself on high ground with excellent access to water resources which made it ideal for military purposes and also served as a staging point during campaigns against Mexican forces south of Austin. The town began developing quickly due to this single factor and by December 8th of 1846, Houston had erected a courthouse and jail within two months of Purchasing the land. The following year saw some major changes when Major General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna replaced Santa Anna as governor of Mexico City following his capture at Palo Alto on March 24th of that year. On November 3rd of 1850, Santa Anna ordered all Texans within Mexican territory to come into compliance with orders summoning all men between 21 years old and 50 years old into ballroom services at San Jacinto College in Austin for instruction under Spanish general Ignacio Zaragoza before leaving for Mexico City carrying with him instructions authorizing Texan citizens "to erect any edifice they may deem necessary" within 10 days...In just over one decade since independence from Spain! This event marks one significant change – Houston's efforts started falling victim to Mexican pressure more regularly than before leading directly to annexation by Texas on October 29th ,1865 . On February 14th 1865 local representatives met informally at First National Bank Building located off Main Street corner Congress Street in order discuss possibilities offered by Confederate Army General Jubal Early while encamped outside Montrose Barracks east side main street across street from current day Goliad Elementary School while other members were present including future Governor Madge Lubbock along with Captain JB Richardson commanding 1st Cavalry Regiment - ended up agreeing upon forming Provisional government under command Lieutenant Colonel Edwin Vickers USMC until called into service again prior arrangement made between Union officer Captains Jack Emmons USMC & George Armstrong Custer

The town grew rapidly due to its location on the Brazos River and its natural resources, including cotton, oil wells, and mineral rights. By 1880, the town had a population of about 1,500 people. In 1907, local businessmen founded the Texas School for Mines and Metallurgy (TSM) in Bonham to promote mining and Metallurgical technology in Texas. The school became one of the leading institutions of its type in the United States during its time. In 1935, TSM merged with other schools forming Texas State University in Austin.
