In 1914, J&R Tobacco Company began production at its new plant north of downtown Bonham on the site of what is now Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company headquarters building. The company operated until it merged with RJR Nabisco in 1997 to form Kraft Heinz Foods Group Inc.. Bonham, Texas was founded in 1879 by James and Amanda Bonham. The town is named after General John A. Bonham, who fought in the Mexican-American War and was later a railroad magnate. The town grew quickly due to its location on the Red River of Mexico, which made it a popular stop for travelers looking for passage to Mexico City. In 1902, the city of Amarillo annexed Bonham, making it one of Amarillo's first municipalities. The city has since grown significantly and now includes over 100 buildings spread across four blocks with a population of over 4,000 people. The history of Bonham goes back to 1879 when James and Amanda Bonham founded the town in what is now Amarillo County, Texas. The couple had traveled throughout Texas searching for a place to settle down and start a new life. They found their perfect site on the banks of the Red River of Mexico – just minutes from where they were heading to build their future home. After years of planning and hard work, Jimmie and Amanda’s dream came true when they finally moved into their newly built home in 1881. The town quickly began To grow as word spread about this beautiful spot on the river bank – everyone wanted to be part of it! The early years were tough for Bonham – there were no bridges or roads so access was limited. However, through dedication and perseverance, the community slowly started building up some infrastructure including schools (the first school opened in 1886), businesses (including an arsenal that served as an early training ground for American soldiers during World War I), and eventually even a park – Today’sBonhomme Park! In 1907, Amarillo annexation created another challenge forbonHAM: how would residents get around without taking public transportation? fortunately enough, Amarillo did not forget about its citizens! A streetcar system was set up which allowed residents easy access to downtown Amarillo from all corners of the municipality! Despite some challenges (like being landlocked between Amarillo and Wichita), things have continue looking good forBonHAM ever since! In 2002, Mayor Dolph Lundgren declared July 4th “Jimmie & Amanda Day” in recognition of all that has been done for our community over these past decades! And we wouldn’t be here today if it weren’t for all those amazing people who have helped make our community what it is today: volunteers from many different organizations like Chamber Of Commerce & Industry PAC; students at Lamar University; numerous local companies; etc….. each contributing something unique to make our community thrive!
