Boerne, Texas is a city in Webb County, Texas, United States. The population was 54,893 at the 2010 census. It is the seat of Webb County government and home to the University of Texas at Austin. In 1884, Mexican bandits raided Boerne so severe damage was done to several homes that developer John Ahern decided to rename it after his friend General Agustín Castro y Costilla (1821-1899), who fought in Mexico's civil war against Spanish forces while serving with Pancho Villa's army. In 1907 when he became Governor of Webb County under then-President Theodore Roosevelt, Ahern rebuilt and enlarged downtown Boerne into a vibrant commercial center with many fine Victorian buildings still standing today including "The Colonel", which served as county courthouse from 1912 until its destruction in 1951; and The Bank building (now known as the Robert Hogg Federal Credit Union Building) built in 1914., both were listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1986 . In 1967 construction began on Interstate 10 between Midland and San Antonio; this freeway would later become I-10W through Boerne before terminating at Loop 610 south near downtown San Antonio

The town was named after Dutchman Hendrick Boer who settled in what is now Boerne in 1795. The first schools in Boerne were built in 1857 and it became a municipality on January 1, 1907. Although its boundaries have changed over time, much of what makes up today's town was founded here. The town has experienced several expansions and contraction throughout its history. It began as a small farming community with only a handful of residents when white settlers arrived from Kentucky in 1848. By 1870, there were over 100 people living here. However, during the late 1800s boers started moving into this area for new land grants that had been made available due to Kansas Game laws which banned slavery without compensation for Native Americans. As more and more people moved into this area, social unrest began to develop which led to increased law enforcement efforts by the local government officials. In 1906, the legal boundary between Boerne and New Braunfels was established following a contest between these two towns over property lines that had been created during Mexican War era annexation of San Antonio County (now San Antonio). This expansion continued through World War I when many soldiers who were stationed here returned home and opened businesses such as grocery stores and hotels before returning home again at war’s end. However, growth slowed down once hostilities ended with only about 60 residents remaining by 1919-20 compared to present day around 1400 people residing within city limits according to 2010 census data In 1923-24 Mayor Laddie Dawson initiated an aggressive campaign against organized crime which resulted in numerous arrests including that of future Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones .
