Boerne, Texas is a small city in the U.S. state of Texas. It is located in Travis County, about 25 miles (40 km) northeast of Austin and 40 miles (64 km) northwest of Dallas. As of the 2010 census, its population was 8,811. The name Boerne comes from Dutch settlers who arrived there in 1847 and named their community "Boorne" after Hendrik van der Borght, an Englishman who had settled in that area two years earlier. The earliest inhabitants of Boerne were Native American people who lived near the present-day downtown area for thousands of years before European settlers began to arrive in large numbers beginning in the mid-19th century. In 1827 Spanish troops under General Antonio López de Santa Anna invaded what is now Boerne and massacred more than 200 Native Americans including women and children at what is now Slaughter Park Cemetery. A few weeks later Mexican troops arrived on horseback and set fire to the village while looting supplies thereby sparing many lives but marking the start of a long period during which indigenous people were forcibly removed from their land by Anglo-American settlers throughout much of North America. The town site was selected as one of several townships organized by Colonel James Bowie in 1840 following his victory over San Antonio's Mexican general Manuel Micheltorena at Peña Blanca Creek on April 14th that year; Bowie's force then marched through central Texas routing Mexican forces en route to claims along the Rio Grande Valley. On November 4th, 1840, Bowie's successor as colonel - Major David Giddings - issued a proclamation announcing that all citizens within five miles (8 km) of any post or fortification within US territory were required to become citizens or submit to military service; only those exempted by disease or blockade could remain inside Mexico proper%. With no provisions for food or shelter for these newly formed civilian populations, most men found themselves unable or unwilling to leave their homes without assistance from friends or family members; some turned into refugees fleeing Mexico’s civil war which continued until 1846 when hostilities ended with Mexican independence.
