In 1900, when Texas became an American state, Boerne was incorporated as a town under the name Brownsville but soon changed its name again to honor General James Hogg (1795-1859). During World War II, Boerne played an important role as one of the largest US military bases on the East Coast due to its location at San Antonio/Bexar County Airport. More recentlyBoerne has been home to two large shopping malls - One anchored by Sears Roebuck and Mitchell & Forbes while another anchored by Macy’s reopened after being closed for 5 years - giving it both high-end retailers as well as mass market stores like WalMart Supercenter which anchors several blocks west of downtown near IH 35W exit #5A

Boerne, Texas is a small town in the U.S. state of Texas and is the seat of Harper County. The population was 7,519 at the 2010 census. It is located in the Dallas–Fort Worth Metroplex. Boerne was founded by Dutch colonists in 1836. The first post office was established in 1840. In 1907, Boerne became part of the Dallas metropolitan area, which included all of Texas except for El Paso and Austin. Boerne has been a center for oil production since before it became an incorporated town, with Refineries No 1 & 2 being built there in the 1920s to process exported crude oil from North Dakota and other parts of Canada.(1) Today, Boerne is home to many businesses related to energy production: ChevronTexaco's Texaco Refinery on IH 35 just east of town; PBF Energy's Petrochemical Plant No 3 on FM 1960 southwest of town; Anadarko Petroleum's Anadarko Operations Center north/northwest of town; Southern Copper Mines' Samaritan Mine southeast off IH 35; Alcoa Co.'s Coke Lake refinery northeast off US 26 near Menard Airport; Marathon Oil Corporation's Barnett field northwest off US 281 outside Menard Airport; Plains Alloys Inc.'s Platts Mill mine northwest outside city limits near US 287) Most recently(2009), Enbridge Pipeline Company’s Line 5 crossing IH35 just beyond downtown Boerne has helped to create a new “ vitality Corridor” adjacent to this historically industrial community – injecting more than $2 billion into local economies over 10 years – creating thousands jobs along its route.(2) The history here goes back centuries: The Dutch founded what would become Harper County in 1836 after overthrowing Mexican rule in Mexico City.(3) They named their new county "Boomerbosch" (after their farmlands). By 1840, there were only about 240 people living here - most were farmers or ranchers who farmed land around present-day boernese churches such as St John's Episcopal Church (now First Baptist Church) on Main Street and Trinity United Methodist Church on Doniphan Road.(4) By 1907, when Houston annexed Harper County into its municipal boundaries,boernese residents numbered 928 out of a total population estimated at 4 million people living withinHouston’s municipal limits at that time.(5)(6)(7)(8)(9) A few years later(1911), Baylor College opened its doors in nearby Waco with classes starting June 8th!
