Boerne, Texas is a small town in San Antonio County, Texas, United States. The population was 3,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Rio Grande Valley metropolitan area. In 1830 it was founded as New Braunfels by German colonists who had arrived in that region during the Mexican-American War. Boerne became a U.S. city on December 14, 1911 when it incorporated as a result of an act of Congress approved by President William Howard Taft. The first settler in Boerne was Johann Friedrich Nickel who arrived in 1838 and built his house on what is now First Street near present day Lamar Boulevard. He also laid out what is now Second Street and Fourth Avenue and named it after his home place of origin: "New Braunfels". In 1839 John Muhlenberg settled nearpresentday Third Street and East Ramon Road with his family from Switzerland; he called this location "Muhlenberg's Bend" because of the bend in the river which separated his property from those around it. At this time there were several settlements along or near the banks of the River San Antonio including Karnes City (later Kaufman County), New Braunfel (now Berrien Springs), Mission Reach (later Medina County), and Mescalero Springs (later Presidio County). It should be noted that these names are all Creek words meaning `place where I will build my cabin'.
