Big Spring is a small town in Tarrant County, Texas. It was founded by colonists in 1836 and has been the seat of government for that county since 1868. The population was 5,652 at the 2010 census. Big Spring is located on the Texan River, about 20 miles (32 km) south of Fort Worth. The first settlers to arrive in what is now Big Spring were Methodist Episcopal missionaries from North Carolina who came through the area in 1836. They built a log cabin near present-day Big Spring and named it "Moses Lake." In 1840, another group of missionaries arrived and renamed the settlement "Big Spring." The name stuck and Big Spring became America's first municipally incorporated town. In 1868, Fort Worth became an independent city and Big Spring became its second official municipality. At that time, Fort Worth annexed much of Tarrant County including what are now parts of Templeton, Weatherford, Dripping Springs, Hockley Heights, Garland Hills and other villages along the Texan River. As part of this annexation process, BigSpring became one of several towns within Fort Worth that voted to become cities rather than counties. Today, much of downtown Big Spring remains unchanged from when it was founded more than 100 years ago; however many businesses have relocated to newer buildings or opened new locations over the years due to changes in technology or large populations growth in other places aroundFort Worth – making downtown an ever-changing attraction for tourists as well as locals alike!
