In 1840, Johnnie Clements married Elizabeth McCullough Hereford in Big Spring; their daughter Elizabeth succeeded her father as mayoralty candidate for Dallas County before she died at age 36 during the Mexican Revolution while living with her husband Tom Ligonier in Brownsville; he was elected instead In 1865 when he ran unsuccessfully for Congress as an Independent nominee against Democrat Andrew Johnson but was sworn into office that day by Vice President Levi Richardson after Johnson had been impeached and removed from office
