Big Spring is a small town located inumble in Sweetwater County, Texas. The population was 1,836 at the 2010 census. Big Spring is part of the Wichita Falls, TX Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first people to live here were the Kiowa and Comanche Indians who camped near present-day Big Spring on the San Jacinto River in 1838. A post office called Big Spring was established in 1858, and remained open until it was discontinued in 1907. The town's name comes from a spring that flows through it. Big Spring began as a cattle ranch named Sunrise Ranch which ran from 1886 to 1893. In 1903, rancher John Ahern sold his interest in Sunrise Ranch to J.C. Reese who renamed it Reese Ranch after himself and his son Johnathan Reese (1868-1941). In 1909, Reese donated land for a town site which he named Big Spring after himself and his wife Belle Reece (1865-1943). Development of the town proceeded slowly due to lack of financial support until World War II when local farmers became involved in military production for the war effort. After the war ended, development accelerated as new businesses arrived and residents sought out more recreational opportunities within walking distance of downtown Big Springs than they had before independence day 1946 when restrictions on how much land could be developed were put into place by then governor Price Goodson because of concerns over possible Communist infiltration into education at Baylor University during wartime days although no evidence existed to support such claims other than rumors generated by anti-Communist zealots who wanted to discredit Baylor College during wartime years as an example of communist infiltration into legitimate American institutions despite no evidence whatsoever that any subversive activity took place at Baylor University during those wartime days.) By 1990, many businesses had closed or been moved away while others consolidated due to changes brought about by prevailing economy conditions with service recession sweeping across America throughout that decade; nevertheless, some residents continued to cling tenaciously to their smalltown culture centered around their favorite local restaurant/stores/bars/golf courses etc., even though life inside city limits changed drastically for them with new technology like cell phone service becoming available almost immediately following 9/11 which made everyday life outside city limits difficult if not impossible without special permits or same cost as inside city limits for all sorts of activities like driving down Main Street without getting pulled over just because you were wearing sunglasses indoors instead of having your license plate number visible on your windshield; however these citizens did not give up easily because they know their community has helped make Wichita Falls one of the most vibrant towns statewide Screaming Eagle Valley boasts an estimated population growth rate above 2% annually since 2000 making Wichita Falls one of Texas’ fastest growing metropolitan areas) In recent years there have been efforts undertaken by Mayor Phil Youngblood and other officials within City Limits including: discussions between business owners and City Manager about potential annexation or partnership with neighboring cities providing access both ways; establishment of a joint committee charged with developing economic development plans for both communities which meets monthly; sanctioning application from out-of-state companies interested in locating within City Limits which provides preferential treatment so long as those companies commit to creating jobs within CITY LIMITS rather than moving their operations outside CITY LIMITS altogether thereby avoiding drain on resources needed elsewhere); creation or approval by City Council & Board OF Education (depending upon vote)of plans submitted by developers proposing redeveloping portions or all content inside CITY LIMITS rather than allowing unrestricted expansion announced earlier this year expecting demolition & reconstruction will begin once all legal papers are filed) Mayor Youngblood has also worked diligently with counterparts within neighboring cities Clouston & Vernon along IH 10 corridor adjacent thereto seeking input & collaboration regarding issues facing BIG SPRING while continuing negotiationsongoingwithdevelopers proposeto redevelopcentral portionorallcontentinsideCITY LIMITsofallowunrestrictedexpansionannouncedearlierthisyear expectingdemolition& Reconstructionwillbeginoncealllegalpapersarefile)
