Big Spring is a small town located in Wise County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,954 at the 2010 census. From its settlement in 1876 until it became an incorporated municipality in 1907, Big Spring was a Menifee post office. In 1876, John W. Webb and his brother-in-law James Fenton founded the town of Menifee on the east side of the Arkansas River in what is now Wise County. Webb and Fenton named their community after springs near Mount Carmel (now Tellico Hills), Kansas. The first post office was established in Menifee on July 5, 1876, under the name of Wellsboro. It served as a stop on the Overland Mail route from Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania to Wichita Falls, Texas. The men who built Big Spring had many varied interests and goals when they arrived in southwestern Wise County. Some were ranchers; others were merchants; still others were farmers; and some simply wanted to establish a new home for themselves and their families. In 1907, Big Spring became an incorporated municipality when it united with nearby Tomball to form Tomball Township. From its early days as a small farming community until it attained its current size as a bedroom community for southeastern San Antonio metropolitan area residents during the late 1990s and 2000s (Big Spring’s growth paralleled that of San Antonio), Big Spring experienced significant change both inside and outside its walls: development increased rapidly around Main Street while traditional industries such as agriculture fizzled or withered away; infrastructure replacement required extensive demolition along Main Street between 1890s brick buildings which served both local businesses providing services like grocery deliveries and newspapers printed locally (and continued doing so into the 21st century) while newer structures replaced them including two high school buildings erected during that time period which remain standing today despite being extensively renovated by various entities over time including modernizing water systems (the only remaining original features from those years)
