In 1859, John Wesley Powell discovered oil in what is now Big Spring while exploring the Bright Angel Formation near Fort Worth. A field was leased by Wm. Fenton and Jno. Ewing for $1 per barrel of oil until 1880 when it was sold to James Dolan for $8 per barrel gross production that year). The oil industry thrived in Big Spring with companies such as Gulf Oil Company (1901-1920) leasing land, drilling wells, and producing large volumes of petroleum until 1942 when World War II interrupted production. The post office at Big Spring was established on February 14, 1861, under the name of Waterville; it was renamed Big Spring on December 2nd of that year after Major General Sterling Price's visit to that area during the Mexican-American War (). On November 5th 1870 Apache Indian Chief Quanah Parker killed four white men near present day Palo Pinto City while they were grazing their horses on federal land (). On January 4th 1874 a group of Texans led by District Attorney Harry Welsh set out from San Antonio to ambush Quanah Parker outside his home village of Antelope Hills (), but they failed due to bad weather conditions (). 2 years later another group led by vigilante marshal George Armstrong resulted in three deaths () when they raided Quanah Parker's campsite () some 60 miles northeast of present day Big Spring (). After this event many Texans began calling themselves "armymen" because they believed martial law had been declared (); this term would be used more frequently throughout Texas history until recent times when today's law enforcement officials are commonly called sheriffs or policemen rather than "armymen". On July 17th 1896 Lone Star Hotels & Casino opened its doors providing gambling services for tourists visiting Amarillo (); this landmark building still stands today along Main Street just south of Interstate 20 within walking distance of most businesses in townspeople' ethnic neighborhoods which can often be found clustered around two churches - First Baptist Church (new), completed in 1907 adjacent to Baylor University Medical School (), and Second Baptist Church (old), originally built back before 1850s across Elm Avenue from Baylor University Medical School (). In early 2010s plans were made for demolition/restoration following an arson attack against one such church which left several items destroyed including statues inside) but these have yet to take place
