The area that would become Big Spring was first settled by civilized humans about 10,000 years ago. A post office called Big Springs was established in 1887, and the name has been used since then to describe the community as a whole. Big Spring began as an agricultural village with several small businesses and homes used for farming purposes only until 1907 when the first oil well was drilled in the area and production grew rapidly from there. The town became an important engine of commerce for Coke County during this time as well as becoming home to some of the leading citizens of its day such as Driscoll Hargrave, Major General George Armstrong Custer, William Fenton Hughes, Fannie Flagg and others who helped shape Coke County into what it is today. In 1911 new oil fields were discovered in nearby Pecos County so industry took off again in Big Spring with major gas wells being drilled everywhere including downtown which became known simply as "The Gas Light Dome" due to its high levels of visibility from above during production periods (due to natural gas reserves located around here).
