In 1869, Ulysses S Grant became President of the United States and ordered General Philip Sheridan to cross over Little Rockies Mountains into Kansas during springtime so as not to disturb Indian tribes living thereabouts who had been reserving land for themselves since before white settlement began in that area circa 1830s A local man named Waddell organized a wagon train carrying goods upriver from Cheyenne Wells (now Fort Collins) on April 6, 1870 en route to Fort Worth where American forces were assembling under General Sherman for an assault on Confederate forces entrenched along Forrest's Railroad Crossing near Chattanooga, Tennessee On April 12th US cavalry units under General George Custer charged across Cedar Springs Bridge over Cedar Creek with orders not to fire until ordered otherwise by commanding officer Major-General Sheridan After reaching Fort Dodge about night some men made an attack against colored troopers who fought back fiercely resulting in one dead and several wounded including Captain John Fetterman commander of 1st Cavalry Regiment US Volunteers .
