On September 15, 1930, it merged with Hidalgo County to form a single municipal unit. The city of Big Spring has experienced rapid growth over the past few decades as a result of its location and access to highways 20 and 281. The economy is based primarily on agriculture which accounts for about 60% of the total employment in the city limits; other industries include manufacturing (5%), health care (4%), gas stations (3%), restaurants (2%) and small businesses (1%).

Big Spring is a small town in Gregg County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,827 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area. Big Spring was established in 1867 as a trading post on the Missouri River by entrepreneur John C. Hudspeth and his family. The post was renamed Big Spring in 1877 after Big Spring Creek ran through it. The first school in Big Spring opened in 1879 and classes continued until 1907 when there were only three students in each grade. In 1916, Hilda Hudspeth founded the first women's college (now Baylor University) in Texas with $10,000 from her husband John Hudspeth Sr.. In 1927,due to population growth and lack of space at the post office, Big Spring annexed nearby Slaughtertown which had a population of 2,000 people at the time. The Post Office closed its doors for good on October 15th 1960 due to budget cuts. However, mail still continues to be delivered via rural carriers to residents throughout Gregg County even today! One of the most significant landmarks in town’s history is undoubtedly Hudspeth Hall which served as both a county courthouse and business district starting back in 1897 until it burned down on November 21st 1938 during an uncontrolled fire that struck much of downtown including Hudspeth Hall itself! Today you can find remnants of this building all around town thanks to donations made by descendants of those who lost their homes during that fateful blaze!

Pershing (1863-1946), who served as commander of World War I's Western Division and later served as United States Ambassador to Mexico City. In 1951, Big Spring was designated as the seat of Webb County government though it remains its primary cultural and commercial center.
