The area became part of Mexico during the 1848 Uprising when American settlers pushed south from Missouri under General Santa Anna. Mexican land grants were made to Anglo-American families such as those who founded Big Spring. In 1857, John Wesley Powell located and mapped the Arkansas River Valley including what is now Big Spring while exploring upstream potential routes for wagon trains crossing the Bighorn Mountains separating Colorado from Texas. In 1865 he designated this stretch along present day I-35 as "Powell's Crossing", naming it after him and honoring his contributions to early American exploration west of Wichita Falls (present day Arlington Heights). In 1870, A W C Brown bought 640 acres (246 hectares) northeast of Big Spring from Manuel Castro for $2 per acre ($40 million today). Brown's Rancho San Francisco quickly became one oftxthe largest cotton plantations in Texas and one of America's most important cotton growing regions with over 1 million bales produced in 1890 alone; this operation yielded more than $1 billion worth of crops statewide that year alone! In 1916 Mrstexas first carillonneer woman played music outdoors using an old bellows engine donated by her husband Dallas Pennock! Today residents enjoy access to many cultural attractions within walking distance including several theaters/moviesplexes/parks as well as local stores and restaurants…..The people have always been there – whether you’ve seen them or not!
Big Spring was founded in 1879 by a group of pioneers led by Captain George K. Smith. The small town soon became an important stop on the Santa Fe Trail, and its residents developed a strong commercial and cultural base. Big Spring grew rapidly during the late 1800s and early 1900s, thanks to its key role in the cattle industry and the availability of water resources. In 1907, Big Spring merged with nearby Sheppard to form the city of Sheppard-Big Spring. Despite its name change, big spring remained a vibrant community until it was destroyed by fire in 1932.
