Big Spring, Texas is home to the world’s oldest commercially operated ammunition factory. The facility was built in 1871 by Dutch immigrant Jacob Schimmelmeyer and his son, John. It became a partner of the Armour Ammunition Company in 1899. In 1912, Big Spring became an independent company and began producing rifle ammunition as well as shotguns and handguns. In 1935, Big Spring merged with nearby El Paso ammunition company to form the current company. At present, Big Spring produces a wide range of ammunition products including rifle rounds (including Nosler 9mm ammo), shotgun rounds (including Remington 12 gauge ammo), handgun rounds (including Glock 17 ammo), and pistol rounds (such as Smith & Wesson 9mm). Big Spring is a small town in Johnson County, Texas, United States. Big Spring was founded in 1881 by Alexander Prentice and his wife Anna. The population of Big Spring was 1,500 at the time of its incorporation as a village. In 1937, the population had grown to 6,000 because of the opening of the Chisholm Trail Highway. The town name comes from an old Cherokee word meaning "springing water." The first settlers arrived in 1881 and built their log cabin on the banks of Clear Fork Creek. They named their home Big Spring because they thought it would be a big spring when they got there. By 1907, most of the original settlers had died or moved away and Big Spring became a ghost town. However, some people continued to live here until after World War II when it became a part of Johnson County. Today, BigSpring retains its pioneer spirit with many businesses including restaurant and gift shop located downtown along Main Street. There are also several small museums located throughout the community- one in each sector: rural history (Harrison Museum), natural sciences (Moses Lake Science Center), arts and crafts (Big Spring Arts & Crafts Fairgrounds), agriculture (Prentice Children's Farm), golf (Champion Golf Course) and more! A total 10% excise tax is levied on all sales within Johnson County which finances both public education through county-owned schools and other important community needs such as street repairs and infrastructure improvements funded by private donations or special assessments levied against landowners within Johnson County who do not generate income from local services like property taxation alone
