John also lived here before moving to California in 1937 when he became an electrical engineer with Western Electric Corporation.; he remained here until his death on December 2nd, 1987 from leukemia at the age of 82 years old.) Benbrook is a town in Hidalgo County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,697 at the 2010 census. It has been part of the Houston-The Woodlands-Sugar Land metropolitan area since 1997. Benbrook was founded in 1873 by prospectors John and Sarah Benbrook. The first post office in Benbrook was established in 1875. The first settler to make a permanent home in Benbrook was James Atherton who arrived on May 5, 1877. Atherton named his farm "Bennett" after one of his family members who had recently died. In 1896, Benjamin Goudreau settled near the intersection of FM 620 and US 183 and named his farm "Goudreau". In 1907, Jørgensen Brothers bought property from Atherton south of FM 620 and renamed it "Benbrook". That year, Fannie Jørgensen donated land north of US 183 for a Methodist church which would be called the First Baptist Church of Benbrook. When the Great Depression hit America in 1938, many farmers lost their homes or were forced to sell their land because they could not afford to keep it up during the tough times. Many people decided to move away from ben Brook due to this problem. However, some people decided to stay because they thought that their community had potential to grow even more than it did before.
