Benbrook is a town in Comanche County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,827 at the 2010 census. It was founded in 1872 by John Fenton Benbrook and his wife Martha. Benbrook is located in the south-central part of Comanche County on the Llano River adjacent to the Mexico–United States border. The name "Benbrook" comes from Benjamin Fenton who settled there in 1872. Others with similar origins include: Fenton (1846-1909), Vinson (1853-1925), Goodloe (1857-1934), and Sloan (1859-1945). In 1907, oil rigs were discovered near Benbrook and production began soon after. The town grew rapidly due to its proximity to oil fields, as well as its location within easy driving distance of Fort Worth and Dallas. As oil prices increased in the 1970s and 1980s, businesses closed or merged while people left for other towns in North Texas or elsewhere because of high costs of living and little opportunity for self-employment. However, today Benbrook remains a vibrant community with many businesses open since it has access to quality education and health care options despite its low population density.
