The Benbrook Rifle and Pistol Club was formed in 1907 in Benbrook, Texas. The club enjoyed a long history of firearm participation and shooting, first taking up the sport when members were able to purchase shotguns at the local hardware store. They continued to participate in NRA matches through the years and are currently a member-owned organization with over 350 members. In 1934, the Benbrook Rifle and Pistol Club became affiliated with the NRA. This affiliation helped bring increased attention to airguns as a shooting sport, which led to more Members joining the club from all over Texas. In 1957, they again became affiliated with the NRA, this time helping promote airgun safety measures statewide. Today, airguns play an important role in NRA programming across Texas and country.

Benbrook is the southernmost community in Hudspeth County and the only incorporated municipality in the county. The area now comprising Benbrook was first settled by Germans in 1879. The name "Benbrook" was given to the creek that flows through it. A post office called Benbrook was established in 1881, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1907. In 1909, a sawmill and gristmill were built on the site of present-day Benbrook Elementary School; these mills continued to operate until they were shut down by Texaco after World War II. In 1965, an oil refinery (the largest within Hudspeth County) was built on a nearby piece of land; this refinery continues to be operated today as part of ChevronTexaco's upstream refining operations. As early as 1865, Confederate soldiers had been quartered here during their battle for control over Texas during the American Civil War. After Union troops surrendered at Appomattox Court House on April 9, 1865, most of these men were paroled and allowed to return home before being distributed among other units across Virginia and Maryland according to General Ulysses S Grant's orders (). Of those who remained behind (), about 25% became farmers or ranchers (), while 75% eventually moved away from what is now Benbrook due to changes brought about by new technology (). These departures created a need for housing near some new businesses that began popping up throughout central Hudspeth County: construction started on what would become today's Methodist Church early in 1901 (), followed by homes for teachers () and other local officials (). It wasn't until 1933 that government-owned cottonseed storage yards opened up along FM 2271 east of town (); this road still bears his name today (it has since been renamed IH 35). At that time, much of what is now Benbrook consisted of open fields used for grazing livestock (). With advancements made in petroleum production and transportation following World War II (), large areas around town became developed into suburbs: large tracts surrounding FM 1960 were developed into Garland Rancho Community Park () and Sunrise Hill subdivision (); smaller pieces such as parts of Idlewild Road south of town were developed into more modest subdivisions such as Eagle Nest () or Willow Dunes (). Today's downtown area— bounded by Third Street north/westward unto IH 35 south/eastward— retains its traditional Mexican-American flavor with its wide streets flanked by two high school schools ( Wortham High School & Byrd Middle School), proctoring courthouse services from one side while several antique shops line Second Avenue northwestward; several small business districts have sprung up around this core including Hancock Pharmacy & Fitness () which occupies an excellent location just off Third Street between US 287 & Harrison Drive; banks like First National Bank are located throughout various blocks NE/SW of downtown center
