When it closed down in 1922, it is said that “the milling industry [inbelted] much importance to this community” (Larson). In 1871, due to its location at the junction of two major trails (the Santa Anna Freeway and San Antonio Expressway), Belton became a county seat under gubernatorial order with John Connally as its first sheriff (Frazier). Today, Belton remains an important center for government and business activities with over 50 businesses located within its limits (Belmont Developmental Center). There are also several schools located within walking or biking distance of both downtown and rural areas across Johnson County Thevironiculturally speaking: Belnton's dominant flavor comes from their many years spent near Corpus Christi; however they have taken some pride in their agrarian roots which still play a big role today "Some local residents say that there's something about living close to Corpus Christi that gives you a certain air—a certain way of being—that makes people here more open minded than other places" (Goudreau)
Belton was founded in 1836, by the founders of the town of Belton. The town was named for General James Belton, who fought in the Mexican-American War. The first post office in Belton was established in 1837. By 1860, the population of Belton had increased to around 200 people. In 1865, a coal mine and mill were built inbelton, which accounted for much of the town's prosperity during its early years. The first school inBelton was built near Main Street and Park Avenue in 1838. A second school building was constructed on Neches Road between 1840 and 1842. A third school building was completed on State Highway 6 between 1850 and1852. In 1861, a Railroad depot and three stores were built at what is now known as Roosevelt Drive across from Roosevelt Elementary School. At this time,BelTON consisted of only a few homes and a small amount of land。 In 1870,the first cotton ginning plant in Texas was set up at what is nowknown as Bigelow’s Ginnery on Ulysses Boulevard north of White Settlement Road (). This ginnery remained operational until 1915 when it became part of Hutson-Simpson producer company Consolidated Cotton Ginners Incorporated.. In 1886,a sawmill started operations at what is now known as Slaughter Mill Drive east of White Settlement Road (). The mill continued operation until 1944 when it became part of United States Steel Corporation . From 1886 to 1909 there were six churches located withinBelton limits: First Baptist Church (founded 1886), Methodist Episcopal Church (1892), Presbyterian Church (1896), Catholic ApostolicChurch (1901), Baptist Reformed African American Zion Mission(founded 1906). In 1909 there were only two churches remaining withinBelton limits: First Baptist Church (founded 1886) and Methodist EpiscopalChurch (established 1896). Both churches merged into one church calledFirst United MethodistChurches formed in 1961 (). From 1911 to 1914 therewere no schools withinBelTON boundaries; however due to World War I enrollment increased dramatically at local high schools which necessitated constructionof new schools . A public library opened its doors to the community on October 17th 1912 with books donated by membersof the local Citizens Committee for Library Development . The library continued functioning until 1954 when it merged into Richardson County Library system with over 3400 volumesand 10milesOf ATM cards ..
