Belton was founded on November 3, 1881 by three young men—George W. Belton (1853-1923), James S. Robinson (1856-1931) and Jesse E. Hixon (1858-1945)— during the earliest days of oil production in Hood County. The town grew rapidly thanks to its location near both large new oilfields and general commerce drawn to its growing population of farmers, mechanics, teachers and other professionals who worked in nearby Dallas and Houston. The town's growth slowed after World War II as demand for goods produced by American manufacturers declined while world production increased for items such as petroleum products needed to sustain European war efforts. However, Belton has seen significant recent growth with the construction of highways that connect it with larger communities in north Hood County as well as additional development along Interstate 10 outside of town limits which has led to an increase in jobs available within and outside of townspeople's homes. Belton is a city in Midland County, Texas, United States. The population was 21,391 at the 2010 census. It is the fourth-largest city in Midland County and the county seat of Midland. It is also the largest city in West Texas. Belton was founded by Anglo-Saxon settlers in 1868 as a small community on the banks of Buffalo Bayou. The name "Belton" comes from an early settler's observation that buffalo were not afraid of water and could cross it without getting wet. In 1881, Belton became one of fourteen townships within what would become Midland County. In 1892, it annexed the unincorporated community of White Sands to its limits and became its own incorporated town. In 1907, Belton built its first municipal building; this structure still stands today as City Hall Annex A on Main Street between First Avenue and Third Street. The original building served as both town hall and jail until 1923 when it was replaced by a new courthouse which still stands today on State Road 6 near US 281 south of town. The Population Census Bureau estimated that the population of Belton had grown to 24,574 by 2000; however, this figure may be underestimates due to methodology changes made during those years which caused inaccurate counts for some Unincorporated Areas within Midland County (e.g., White Sands). As reported by the 2010 UBS American Community Survey released February 1st 2011 – 20% more people live in Belton than did 10 years earlier despite only 1/5th of BelTON's total land area! This implies that there are many people living just outside or around downtown who never set foot inside or counted as residents of their local government entity! In 1905, the town had a population of 15 people and a post office. In 1912, the town annexed nearby Livingston County. Belton experienced significant growth during World War II. The city became an important center for munitions production and wartime trade. After the war, Belton experienced a decline in its fortunes, but it has since recovered slightly. In recent years, Belton has become one of Texas' fastest-growing cities thanks to its growing economy and burgeoning nightlife scene.
