In 1907, Gifford Silliman developed what is now downtown Belton with his Silliman Home Colony which included 3 blocks of beautiful homes on high ground overlooking Prairie View A&M University campus across Prairie View Road from where Central Expressway crosses Spur 3017 about one mile southeast of downtown Belton limits on Rt 512 just south of US 281 entrance off FM 1960 N/E Beltran Road near Plaza Drive housing units were also developed by Gifford Silliman but did not include houses on college property until after he sold them to Baylor University in 1938 which raised money for World War II veterans Memorial Fund then changed name to Baylor Memorial Hospital thenceforth Baylor Health System
