It was founded by Adolph Belton and his wife, Anna BelleBelton, on December 4, 1853. The first post office in Belton was established on October 15, 1854. On February 14, 1903, Belton became a city with a population of 24 people. Belton is part of the Tyler-based Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) which has a total population of 524,512 as of July 1, 2010. The MSA includes all or portions of five counties: Cameron County (the largest), Hidalgo County (the second-largest), Lampasas County (the third-largest), Newton County (the fourth-largest), and Wise County (the smallest). The climate in Belton is generally temperate; however, it can be hot and humid during summer months and very cold during winter months. Belton is a city in San Antonio County, Texas, United States. The population was 24,521 at the 2010 census. It is the second largest city in San Antonio County and the seat of San Antonio Municipal District No. 5. The area that became Belton was first settled by pioneers in 1827 and named for Georgebelton, a British man who purchased land near present-day Belton. In 1828, Houston businessman Stephen F. Austin donated land to make up part of what would become Belton. The town began as a small agricultural community with about fifty residents until it reached its current size in the early 20th century.The Cotton Belt Railroad arrived in Belton in 1885 and boosted the economy of the town by bringing jobs to townspeople who had been farming cotton on their family farms since before that time. Belton played an important role during World War II as one of six towns located along US Highway 281 that were used as military airfields for American forces fighting in Europe and North Africa (the others being Fort Sam Houston, Friday Field and Dyess Army Airfield). After the war ended, most of those facilities were mothballed or sold off but Belton continued to serve as an airport until it closed its doors in 2006.
