Belton, Texas is a small town in the US state of Texas. The population was 2,814 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Houston–The Woodlands–Sugar Land metropolitan area. The name Belton comes from "Beltone", an Italian immigrant who settled in what is now known as Belton in 1857. Beltone's ranch stretched from present day Whitney to Mission Bend and beyond, and his descendants continued to live there until 1924 when they moved to nearby Friendswood. In that year, Beltone's grandson, Samuel Beltone Jr., donated land for a public square in Belton which still remains today. Belton has been through many struggles over the years but it has also seen some very interesting moments. For example, on November 16th of 1912, residents of Belton staged a protest against railroad construction that would move them closer to Houston. They succeeded in stopping the trains and causing a stir that led to other towns across Texas coming together and forming their own Railway Commission to fight railway consolidation. Another moment came on October 17th of 1977 when Hurricane Rita made landfall near Belton and caused extensive damage along the southern border of Texas. After days of surveying damage done by Rita alone, Mayor Earl Kemp announced that anyone with property within 1 mile (1 km) of Corpus Christi was expected to help clean up after the storm. Although not all residents chose to participate, many did because they knew it would be an opportunity for people within their community to see how much their actions could affect others around them directly

Belton was founded in 1838 by Captain George Belton. It became a post office in 1839, and a town in 1846. The first school was built in 1840. The first store was opened in 1845. In 1865, a railroad station was built and the town developed into an agricultural center.
