Many of these pioneers were farmers who decided to move to what is now south-central Texas because of its fertile soil and thriving cattle industry. By 1899, Belton had population of just over 100 people and it grew rapidly during the early 1900s thanks to various industrialization projects associated with the Midland Railroad. In 1925, Belton became one of six towns located within the new vicinity called Midland County. During World War II, Belton played an important role as a manufacturing center for munitions production on local farms. The postwar years saw significant growth for the town as businesses opened up and more people arrived. However, by 1970Belton had lost much of its economic significance due to demographic changes in south-central Texas and other southeastern states that have since replaced it as a bedroom community for Dallas/Fort Worth metropolitan areas. Today, Belton remains an important cultural enclave within southern Travis County – home to numerous antique stores and galleries, along with several restaurants and bars – but its economy has changed little over time

Belton was founded by George Higginson in 1881 as a small town around the corner from what is now Red Oak Road and Highway 51. By 1902 it had grown to its current size of . The first post office opened in Belton on April 14, 1881. The name of the town changed to Belton during World War I because many American soldiers were stationed here until they left for Europe or Japan after that war ended. The city was named for General James Fenton (1822-1892), who served with distinction in Creek Wars against Spanish forces east of the Rio Grande River and later became an Indian agent with the US army's 4th Infantry Division during Reconstruction following the Civil War. In 1911, Belton annexed much of Garland County including present day Mesquite and Richardsonville which would form its second largest municipality only two years later when it annexed smaller towns such as Commerce Run and Weatherford Heights along with unincorporated areas near present day Aubrey Drive and Loop 610 East between Beltway 8 and Interstate 30/I-35 north of downtown Dallas before becoming one large municipality under City Hall control on December 12, 1913 On January 1, 1916, due to annexation by Garland County as well as some other changes made to municipal government by then Mayor Harry Crouch (D) following community protests over high property taxes not being reduced when proposed budget cuts were made three months earlier – including reducing police staffing levels; increasing streetlights; adding parkland; increased roadways; developing new businesses etc.–Belton became an official city Limits Town under City Council jurisdiction instead of just a Municipality controlled by City Hall while continuing to operate within Municipal Regulations & Ordinances still governing all aspects of Municipal Government operated by both Levels until repealed effective July 1st 1979 effective sunsetting back to former Regulations & Ordinances effective September 15th 1966 prior to reestablishment effective January 1st 1979 On December 12, 1923 Mayor Harry Crouch announced plans for a new shopping center adjacent to his home on Beltway 8 about concurrent with construction of Interstate 10 freeway southward from downtownDallas into Garland County–the original routing plan for beltway 8 & 10 bypassing downtownDallas & terminating at McKinney Avenue southeast via I-10 freeway rather than northwest via Rt 90 toward Dallas airport allowing more room for growth also shifting development away from residential neighborhoods towards commercial corridorsirectional growth throughout much portions annexation including caucasian greek mormons who had been living primarily within Sam Houston Park adjacent Downtown&Uptown until waves of white flight began moving them out into suburban communities beginning around 1950s creating commuter complexes outside urban cores continuing even beyond 1980s when beltway 8 closed leaving only Loop 610East remaining linking downtownDallas w/Loop 610West
