Belton, Texas is a city in Brazoria County, Texas, United States. The population was 5,821 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Brazoria County. The first European to explore what is now Belton was Spanish explorer Hernando de Soto in 1539. In 1836, the Mexican General Antonio López de Santa Anna founded the town of San Fernando on an island in Galveston Bay and named it after his friend and lieutenant general Santa Anna. A post office called San Fernando had been established in 1835 but no mail ever arrived there because of the difficulty getting horses to cross the bay from Galveston Island to San Fernando Island. In 1861, Jim Bowie built a ranch here and named it Belton after himself. The town started to grow rapidly when oil was discovered here in 1901. By 1915, Belton had over 100 residents and was developing into a major center for oil production and trade. The town prospered until World War II when its economy collapsed as Texaco merged with other companies and production stopped entirely. After World War II ended, Belton slowly regained some economic stability by becoming one of the largest buttresses of Texas culture during that time period Belton currently has 3 high schools: Baylor High School (Formerly McKinney High School), Roman Catholic Bishop James Meeks Collegiate Institute (formerly St Ignatius Minor College), and Southwest Independent School District #2 (former Alamo Heights ISD). There are also 2 elementary schools: Park View Elementary & First Baptist Church Elementary; and 1 charter school: Lamar Academy Charter Schools which opened in fall 2006

Belton was founded in 1881 by John Belton, a rancher and banker who had come from Kentucky to establish himself in what is now Medina County. The town grew rapidly and by 1907 it had a population of 24,000 people. In 1925, Belton became one of six towns in Medina County to be annexed into Dallas; this made Belton one of the fastest-growing cities in Texas between 1925 and 1970. In 1970, when Dallas annexed all but two of Medina County, including parts of downtown Belton, Mayor Harry Byrd decided that the city should become its own municipality with its own charter and government Weimar style; this led to some street name changes (such as "John F Kennedy Boulevard" after JFK's assassinated president), but no real change to local government until 2003 when an agreement was reached between both Mayerland Township ( downtownDallas) and nearby Arlington Heights Township to merge their governments into one municipal entity called "BelTON". This consolidation has helped improve infrastructure withinBelTON while also increasing economic opportunities for residents due to increased collaboration among municipalities across metropolitan areas - something that has been particularly evident with regards to development around Beltline Park which has seen significant growth thanks largely to corporate sponsorships like Verizon Wireless - making it one of the most vibrant urban neighborhoods in North Texas today!
