Gun hammers have been around for centuries, and their use has gradually become more commonplace. While there are many different types of gun hammer, the most common type is the shotgun hammer. A shotgun hammer is a metalheaded object that projects from the bottom of a shotgun's stock to striking the target. Shotgun hammers come in a variety of designs, including those with both standard and Astro-hammer heads. The early shotguns were equipped with an inline or externalhammer ( FIGURE 1 ), which was attached to either side of the stock by a strap or even chain. The inlinehammer was used as a primary means of striking shotshells out of laissez faire mode; that is, without being influenced by recoil or gravity. When hunting large game such as deer or bear, it was necessary to take advantage of Species Mode, which allowed one to crush shothells so they would not penetrate deeply into their fleshy barrier ( FIGURE 2 ). To do this successfully, one needed two hands and an appropriate firearm accessory - such as a muzzleloader - in order to take advantage of the internalhammer system on later shotguns. After World War II, new technologies led to development of shotguns with more advanced firing mechanisms that required an externalhammer ( FIGURES 3A-D ). These new guns cameequipped with both standard and Astro-hammerheads on separate headsstock assemblies ( FIGURES 4A-C ). The externalhammer systems allowed shooters to achieve greater accuracy by providing better control over strike power when hitting targets at distances beyond 25 yards (.50 caliber). As technology improved and more firearms became available for concealed carry purposes, shotgun hammers began becoming less commonly used and only appeared occasionally in modern handguns. However, they are still very popular among experienced hunters who need reliable strikes against prey close up or at long ranges

Belton is a city in Limestone County, Texas, United States. The population was 5,815 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Austin–Round Rock metropolitan area. The city was founded in 1881 by James Belton and his brother-in-law, Sam Houston. The first post office opened in 1882. The name "Belton" was chosen for the abundance of hogs on the town site. Belton enjoyed some success as a cotton gin and cottonseed producer before becoming known as an agricultural center during the late 19th century and early 20th century due to its location on the Red River near two major railroads. In 1937, Belton became one of five cities in Texas to be designated by Governor Floyd Pearson as a "Texas City of Progress." In 1969, Belton became home to Texas A&M University's new College Station campus after it moved from Kyle Field in nearby Round Rock. That same year saw also another significant change when Belton's municipal water supply turned into Lake Travis following restrictions placed on Austin's Municipal Water Authority due to concerns over long-term sustainability of that system following heavy rains during Hurricane Brown (later Harvey).
