Belton, Texas is a small town located in Vernon County, Texas, United States. The population was 7,711 at the 2010 census. As of the 2016 census, Belton has an estimated population of 8,829. The community was named after General John A. Belton who helped to drive Mexico out of Texas in 1836. Belton began as a cattle and stagecoach stop on the Cimarron Trail between Fort Worth and Dallas in 1881. By 1902 it had become a smaller but more important railway junction for north-south traffic through Vernon County. In 1912 the post office was renamed to Belton after General John A. Belton, who had helped to drive Mexico out of Texas in 1836. The first school in Belton was built in 1889 by Mrs. James Gilder and Mr. Jerald Weems; it served grades one through six until 1928 when it became part of the Vernon Independent School District which still operates it today as Grades 7-12th Grade School #2 (formerly called “Redeemer”). In 1923 floodwaters destroyed most of Vernon High School which served students from Belleview Elementary School until that year; Belleview Elementary reopened with new classrooms and facilities under construction just east of present day Showers Park Drive on what is now Middlebrook Road adjacent to Valley View Cemetery & belting off into NorthValleyHighSchools at its eastern edge near present day Grayling Ranch Road (just south of US 210) This project finally opened on September 1st 1975 after being closed for over 40 years due primarily to lack of funds! After much deliberation by both local elected officials as well as parents/guardians/community members we were able to secure funding from then Governor Ronald Reagan for replacement equipment including: two large gymnasiums (now known as Rayburn Stadium), four tennis courts (& three full size softball diamonds), playgrounds & several thousand dollars worth of enhancements such as: brand new roofs & windows throughout all buildings including our original brick building back when there were only 12 pupils! Unfortunately due torixactional events within our community caused extensive damage during Hurricane Ike which caused extensive flooding across much or all campus including lossof valuable property valued at over $200K !! Finally almost 50 years later we are still awaiting payment from Harvey Flood Relief fund set up specifically for this purpose so that our campus may once again be able to offer its students quality educational opportunities !!! ***************************** BelTON – established 1881; Named after General John A.-A., who helped drive Mexico outta Texa in 1836

Belton is a town in Starr County, Texas, United States. The population was 3,853 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area. Belton was founded in 1881 by white settlers as an agricultural community on the banks of the Trinity River. The town name may be derived from "belted" (a type of clothing) or "belton" (a smalloted name for an early cotton plantation). In 1888, Belton became a county seat and began to grow rapidly as a result of its location on the main trade route betweenDallas and Houston. By 1910, Belton had become one of the most important cotton towns in Texas. In 1908, young attorney John W. Garland opened his first law office in Belton. The following year, he married Ida Mae Pickett and moved to Belton with her; they would eventually have four children together. Garland soon became successful in business and politics; he served eight terms as mayor and two terms as state senator before dying in office at age 70 in 1951. His wife continued to live until she passed away in 1984; their son John Garland succeeded him as Mayor of Belton after his death in 1986. The city's growth slowed during World War II because many citizens enlisted for military service instead of working on farms or ranching; however, it resumed its surge during postwar years when new industries such as engineering services sprang up around downtowns all over Texas due to wartime demand for metal products such as cars and radiospies. Continued economic development has led to increased housing prices throughout downtown BelTON since 2000 while also creating thousands of jobs across various sectors including health care jobs within city limits while also adding more than $200 million USD worth of investment into downtown businesses since then courthouse expansion completed prior to 2016 brings total courthouse square footage up to 5013 ft² (228 m²).
