Belton was founded in 1881 by John Belton and his brother James. The first post office was established in Belton on April 15, 1881. In 1907, the name of the town changed to honor General George B. McClellan after he served as Commanding General of all American forces during the Mexican–American War and as Secretary of War under Ulysses S. Grant. Belton's economy is based on agriculture with a significant number of jobs in transportation and manufacturing; however, over recent years it has also become an important center for trade within the Austin–Round Rock metropolitan area due to its location near Interstate 35W and other major highways linking Austin with Mexico City and El Paso. The population peaked at 3,812 in 1960 but has since declined slightly; however, there are still several hundred residents working in agriculture (primarily cotton), retail trade (mainly clothing stores and convenience stores), health care (including several hospitals located in nearby Round Rock), services (such as accounting and law offices) and education (particularly private schools). There are also a few businesses that have moved from their original locations to new ones throughout the city due to current or expected growth within the local market.; currently there are only three restaurants left from when Belton had over 100+.

Belton is a town in McLennan County, Texas, United States. The population was 3,868 at the 2010 census. It was founded in 1881 by William Belton and his wife Anna. It became a city in 1907 and was incorporated as a town on March 14, 1912. The original name for the town was "Heavenly City". Belton is located northwest of Austin and east of Amarillo on FM 524. according to the U.S. Census Bureau, the town has a total area of , all of it land. The surface topography is rural with rolling hills and several small lakes along its spine uphill from downtown. Elevations range from flatlands near the center to 8,000 feet (2,100 meters) or more at various points around the perimeter of town limits which include most of the high schools and college campuses that make up Belton's core ZIP code area (71001-71529). Belton's history begins with William Belton who arrived in 1881 from Illinois with his family after selling his farmstead to John Wesley Hardin for $1 million dollars ($102 million adjusted 2016 prices). His son James Bledsoe Belton also arrived in 1881 and began ranching there until he sold out to Nelsons in 1902. He then served as mayor starting in 1916-17 before becoming US Senator from 1898-1901 under McKinley but died suddenly while serving office leaving no children legitimate heirs so an election for mayor resulted in Leroy Hargrave taking over as mayor instead which he held until 1925 when he ran unsuccessfully for Congress against Alfred Ewing JR.. In 1919 Harry S Truman was elected president making him one of only 2 Americans ever to hold both offices simultaneously (the other being Daniel Webster). From 1923-1945 four different mayors were elected with Truman being reelected twice due to term limits set during that time period; Floyd McKnight (1927-28), George W Bush (2002-03), Ann Richards (1994–95) and Bill Clinton (1993–2000). A fire destroyed much of downtown Belton on October 21st 1886 which caused great damage although not considered catastrophic at that time as some estimate $500 thousand ($ 50 million adjusted 2016 prices) had been spent rebuilding within six months following that event days later when insurance claims came through finally reducing overall loss by $200 thousand ($ 20 million adjusted 2016 prices). This helped spur investment including new construction throughout downtown Blanton which continues today with much higher quality finish than when first built primarily because few if any fires have reached this level again since then including 6 major hurricanes all making landfall within 1 mile or less radius between 1906 & 2015 all without causing significant property damage
