Belton was founded in 1881 by John Belton and his wife Nancy. The Beltons were farmers who moved to the area from Missouri after their farm failed. In 1901, they founded the First Baptist Church which still operates today. The original plat for Belton was 1 mile long and 20 wide with a population of just fifty people. It was named after Colonel George Washington Baylor who donated land for the town’s incorporation in 1893. Belton experienced its biggest growth period during World War II when it became one of sixteen towns within Travis County that became militarized zones and participated in the war effort. After the war, many businesses closed down because there wasn't enough demand for their products anymore due to postwar inflation rates and an overall decline in farming activity statewide. However, some businesses such as Grote & Dennison Hardware reopened and continue to operate currently until this day despite allegations of fraudster practices by management prior to their closure In recent years, Belton has undergone several changes including becoming more suburban-like with more shopping malls, restaurants, and nightlife options available near Interstate 15 than when it first began growing post-war (although there are still some traditional agricultural activities).
