It is the county seat of Dallas County and home to Belton High School and the Dallas Independent School District. The area now known as Belton was first settled by German immigrants in 1859. In 1876, following annexation by Dallas County, Belton became part of the new city ofDallas. In 1907, when Dallas City limits were extended eastward to include much of present-day Belton Township*, the town seceded fromDallas and formed its own municipality. In 1941, during World War II*, BelTON* served as an Army airfield supplying B-24 bombers used in missions over Japan*. After hostilities ended in 1945, the airfield was decommissioned and decay began to take hold; however, it reopened in 1961 as a community center operated by DART* (Dallas Area Rapid Transit). BelTON residents began protesting for years against plans to demolish their community center; however no action was ever taken until last year when a group composed mostly of amateur archaeologists* decided to dig up evidence that an old cotton gin had once been located at one of their local schools†
Belton, Texas is a small town in Waller County, Texas. It is located on the banks of the Arkansas River and has a population of about 4,000. The Belton-Navarro City School District serves the town. Belton was founded by James Bowie in 1873 as a result of his land purchase from the Navarro Indians. Bowie built a trading post here and started to sell goods to Indian traders. In 1886, he founded the Bowie Mills Company, which became one of the leading cotton mills in Texas. The company operated until it closed its doors in 1980. The Belton community has been permanently damaged by Hurricane Harvey however all residents have returned to their homes and are now rebuilding their lives back up again. The Main Street businesses that were destroyed during Hurricane Harvey have reopened and are now serving their original customers again. There are also several restaurants, bars and stores that remain open throughout the entire town despite being impacted byHurricane Harvey.
