The town began as a farmstead on the east side of the Brazos River. A post office called Belton was first established in 1839, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1893. Its first settlers were Methodist missionaries from Charleston, South Carolina. In 1840, a store and sawmill were built near the present day intersection of US 99 and FM 527. The community grew rapidly during the 1850s due to its location along a main stage route connecting Houston and Dallas. By 1860, Belton had an estimated population of 2,500 people and had begun to buildutes such as churches and schools. In 1865, the Railroad Commission approved plans for a new rail line through Midland County that would connect Dallas with Fort Worth via Belton. Construction started on the railroad lines in 1866 but soon stopped due to financial problems; however, construction resumed two years later under different leadership. The original station building still stands today on US 99/FM 527 – at which time it served as the only stop on the line. Belton reached its peak development around 1870 when it had an estimated population of 10,000 people; however, this figure fell over time because of increased competition from other towns along the railway line. By 1910 there were only 854 residents living in Belton proper while 3 miles (5 km) west of town there were numerous small villages dotting ranchlands that straddled both banks of the Brazos River (the largest being Tomball). One notable local resident during this period was J C Saunders who ran a large cattle ranch that stretched across much of Midland County north to south before selling it off in 1916 to become one of defense contractor Lockheed Aircraft Corporation's plant sites near San Antonio Airport; Saunders also became one of Texas' wealthiest men thanks to his ownership stake in Lockheed Aircraft Corporation).
