Bellaire is a town in Johnson County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,695 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Wichita Falls metropolitan area. Bellaire was founded on December 12, 1876 by women and men from nearby Wichita Falls. The town name is derived from “Belle” which was given to it by Mrs. John Hennessey during a birthday celebration for her son Belleisle Hennessey who had just turned one year old. The first post office in Bellaire opened on December 12, 1876. The first settler in Bellaire was Mr. Jenson Crouch and his family who arrived November 15th of that year along with their livestock and supplies. By 1870, there were 10 families living in the community including 7 farmers and 3 miners prospecting for coal near Longview Creek while others labored on plantations back east in what is now Tyler County (now Coahuila). In 1881, James Auld established a store hereabouts which soon became known as “Auld”s Drug Store & Warehouse because he did most of the sales himself until he moved to Wichita Falls and started his own drugstore there in 1886-87. In 1896-97 Jens Rasmussen built a log cabin hereabouts which still stands today as an historical landmark known as Rasmussen's Cabin (later called "Alma"). In 1902 local farmer Wm Fenton platted what would become Bellaire square block land grant adjoining downtown Wichita Falls lots where citizens met to organize their village or township government with election held every two years thereafter January 1st of odd numbered years followed by November 15th of even numbered years with a $1 per capita assessment payable by said trustees to finance school erection & other needs thereof - this constituted our present day Municipal Union Building located at ………………………………………… street corner opposite City Hall – this building has been Home of the Village Board since incorporation ……………………………………..
