The first firearms in Bellaire were small, percussion-fired pistols. A community of farmers and hunters had gathered around the buffalo ranch on the edge of town in the early 1800s, and began to use firearms for hunting and protection. In 1907, an American military post named Fort Sam Houston opened near present-day downtown Bellaire and became home to local soldiers and their families until it was evacuated in 1945 as World War II unfolded. In 1957, a group of entrepreneurs led by banker Waco Hargrave purchased land east of downtown from the state government for $1 million and began development with assistance from businessman Milton Hershey Jr.. The original name for the town - "Hershey" - soon changed to "Bellaire" in honor of Hershey's friend and backer, J.B. Pennybacker Sr., who also agreed to be its first mayor. After years of growth and investment by both locals and outsiders, Bellaire's commercial heartland officially opened up on December 12, 1960 when Interstate 610/Uptown Expressway (I-610) bypassed downtown on its way to Houston through connectors joining I-10 (westbound) at Highway 605 (northbound), I-610 at Avenue K (southbound), US 290/US 281 (eastbound), and Loop 610 Spur (southwestward). As early as 1976, plans were underway for a new hospital north of downtown that would serve as both a teaching center for medical students coming out of Baylor University's School of Medicine adjacent to Parkland Memorial Hospital across I-610 from north central Bellaire;[2] however construction never commenced due to lack Of funding though some key partners did appear including local developer Lamar Hunt,[3][4][5] eventually leading directly to Hunt becoming majority owner company Donnybrook Ventures which renamed itself Nexstar Broadcasting Corporation following their purchase over Time Warner Cable’s Bright House Networks subsidiaryduring the Merger Frenzy days before Comcast acquired Time Warner.[6] ticketholders include Hathaway Energy Partners LP[7], FirstCorp LLC[8], Renaissance Technologies LLC,[9][10] MDC Partners LP[11],[12][13] notable current orFormer tenants include Apple Incorporated,[14][15] Costco Wholesale Complex Store #1 & #2 &# 16 @ Belt Line Rd & I-610 South [16], Pritchett Restaurants Incorporated.[17],[18], Wegmans Food Markets Incorporation
