Bellaire is a small town in Dallas County, Texas, located about 20 miles west of downtown Dallas. The population was 9,362 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dallas–Fort Worth metropolitan area and is included in theDallas–Forth Worth statistical area. The Bellaire Historic District was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1976. The district includes 60 buildings dating from 1881 to 1951, most of which are contributing properties to the historic district. The first settlers in what would become Bellaire were Orville Hance and his wife Margaret (née Kapp). They came by wagon train from Arkansas in 1836, and started a farm on land that they bought from David Swindleback. In 1839 they had two children, John and Margaret; John died young at age 8 months old. In 1840 Swindleback sold them 10 acres for $10 cash plus 2 horses and 4 cows. The Hances raised cotton until 1863 when Union troops burned their crops for lack of food supplies during the American Civil War. From 1865 until 1870 they living off credit from friends before starting a new farm out west on 210 acres purchased from James Ewing for $3500 with interest paid annually . By 1880 there were fifteen residents of Bellaire; by 1910 there were only six residents remaining due to railroad development nearby . In 1906 Judge Augustus Cranch erected a one-story limestone courthouse which still stands today near Main Street east of US 69/75 north of Loop 657 (now US 183/637) within the boundaries of the currentbellairehistoricdistrict
Bellaire, Texas was founded in 1836 by James Bell. The town was named after General John Bell, who helped lead the Texans to independence from Mexico. The first settler in the area was Capt. George Hill, who built a cabin on the banks of the Trinity River. By 1839, about 50 people were living in Bellaire. In 1841, a school and post office were established in the town. A cotton gin and distillery were also built in Bellaire during this time.In 1865, bellaire incorporated as a city. The first mayor of bellaire was J C Bruce. From 1870-1875, Mayor John Boggs ledbellaire through an economic boom that saw many businesses open up and population grow from around 100 to 1500 residents. During this time period, local churches started providing services such as Sunday schools and social clubs to help keep the community together. After Boggs’ retirement, City Council turned their attention to more pressing matters such as garbage collection and street improvement before returning to normal operations in 1876
