Beeville is a town in Hudspeth County, Texas, United States. The population was 2,624 at the 2010 census. It is the seat of Hudspeth County. The town was founded in 1876 by Methodist missionaries from Illinois. Beeville grew rapidly as a result of its location on the railroad and its access to water resources. In 1902, the townsite was annexed by Hudspeth County; Beeville retained its independent governance until 1959. In 1890, John Wesley Powell crossed the Arkansas River into what is now Hudspeth County when he led an expedition exploring Colorado National Monument. He named his new discovery Beeville after one of his assistants, James Ewart Beauregard (1822-1900). The first post office in Beeville opened in 1892. The name change occurred because it became apparent that many people were trying to pronounce "beyville" with two syllables pronounced like "by".[2] During World War II, Beeville played an important role in supporting military efforts in the region by manufacturing munitions and food items such as gasoline and ammunition. The Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941 and much of Texas was destroyed in what is known as the Hiroshima bombing campaign. As a result of this attack, many residents chose to flee their homes fortexas during World War II.[3]
