Beeville is a city in Schleicher County, Texas, United States. The population was 9,868 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Schleicher County and the largest city in Schleicher County by population. The Beeville Historic District is a registered historic district that includes buildings dating from 1859 to 1911. The first settler in what is now Beeville was John Pemberton who came overland from Canada in 1838. He named his new land "Beeville" after his home town of Boulogne-sur-Mer, France. Pemberton's heirs sold their holdings in 1845 to Edward Clements and James Waddell, who founded the community of Beeville on October 8, 1846. By 1860 there were 20 settlers living in Beeville with 3 stores and 2 blacksmiths. In 1861 Jno Atherton organized a Masonic Lodge No 1 which still meets today at 7 E Main St (now First Baptist Church). In 1865 Hernando de la Vega purchased 5 acres north of town for $10 per acre and laid out a subdivision called La Cueva which became known as Old Town Beeville. La Cueva included four shops, three churches (oneMethodist - one Presbyterian), six homes and two schools - all built before 1870 when it was annexed by the City of Austin. de la Vega served as Mayor from 1865 to 1870 while also serving as justice of the peace and postmaster general for Schleicher County until he died suddenly on January 12, 1886 at age 59 years old becoming only the second Texan ever to die in office after Sam Houston Jr.. In 1901 William "Pete" Ladd acquired 61 acres east side of town for $25 per acre near present day US 183/Highway 290 junction just south of I-610 bridge; this area became known as New Town Beevilla which included nine residences, five businesses including a bank and a grocery store, two schoolhouses (one high school - now Baylor University) and Pete's farmhouse used today by New Town Council meetings location: 116 N Main Street . . . Mr./ Mrs./Grateful Dead fan club met here on December 10th 1978 while they were waiting around long lines outside Dallas Convention Center prior to their show so we could snap some pics!
